Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit. – Jawaharlal Nehru
Our adventure begins at the Amazon Travel office where we will meet before traveling by road via arranged transportation to the bridge of the Shiripuno River. From here we will transfer to a motorized canoe to take us downstream to our destination. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to see many species of birds and maybe some other wildlife. About 5:00 pm we will arrive at the home of the leader of the Waorani where will we pitch our tent and get settled in before taking a night walk through the jungle in search of frogs, insects, and other nocturnal creatures, before returning for dinner and rest.
Our day will be packed with great adventures starting with a long trek (4-5 hours) through the immense jungle after breakfast, which will be served at 6:00 am. Here in the protected territory of the Waorani People, we have the opportunity to observe many species of birds along with other wildlife such as lorikeets, parrots, toucans, wooly monkeys, red howlers, capuchins and squirrel monkeys. Our guide will also show us the highly toxic curare plant, and how they use this toxin to hunt and survive in the Amazon jungle.
We will return to camp for lunch before heading out on our next excursion: fishing for piranhas in the Shiripuno River. Our evening after dinner will wind down with a cultural demonstration of the daily way of life for a traditional Waorani Family.
After breakfast, we will hike to the saladero (mineral-rich mud holes) used by species of mammals such as tapir and peccaries. Along the way, we may even see some of the animals the frequent the saladero, or maybe theirs tracks or the tracks of the great hunter the Jaguar.
We will return to camp for lunch and an evening of free time to spend with our host family. Later in the evening, we will try our luck at caiman spotting.
Before breakfast, we will raise early to listen to the songs sung by the women to greet and thank the new day. After breakfast, we will spend the morning participating in ancestral games, before saying goodbye to our hosts and returning to Shiripuno and then on to Coca. We should arrive back in Coca by 4:00 pm.
