I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” ~ Susan Sontag
We’ll depart from Coca at 8:00 am and head down the Napo River to Nuevo Rocafuerte, the last Ecuadorian border town. This will take about 4 hours away by motorized canoe. During the journey, a snack will be served as you admire the beauty of the Ecuadorian rainforest as well as the different indigenous communities settled along Napo river. Once we arrive in Nuevo Rocafuerte we’ll have lunch before continuing on to Yaku Huarmi where we’ll be staying. After cabin assignments, we’ll have time to get settled in before a welcoming dinner. Then we will take a night walk to find insects, reptiles, tarantulas, nocturnal monkeys, and who knows what else!
Breakfast will be served at 7:00 am followed by a canoe ride down the Cocaya River until we reach the path where we’ll walk through the jungle of the Cuyabeno Reserve and learn about the different medicinal, edible, timber, hallucinogenic, and poisonous plants as well as the fauna of the place. We’ll return to the cabins for lunch and a short break before we head back to the Cocaya River and then the Aguarico River to spot the magical Pink Dolphins. Here you’ll have the opportunity to feed to dolphins by hand. Afterward, we’ll try our luck at catch & release piranhas fishing before returning to the cabins for dinner and rest.
Today’s breakfast will be ready at 5:00 am so that we can get an early start go bird watching along the river and Cocaya lagoon. During our time at the lagoon, we’ll learn about the Amazonian mangrove, orchids, bromeliads, and other plants unique to this area. Next, we’ll take an easy hike through the jungle to reach the saladeros of parrots and other species of birds and animals. During our hike, your guide will continue to show you the important flora and fauna as well as the largest tree in the Amazon known as the Ceibo.
We’ll return to the cabins for lunch return and then heading back to visit the Pink Dolphins again. Then we’ll start our return trip to Nuevo Rocafuerte where we’ll have dinner and stay the night in town as we will have to depart early for Coca the next morning.
Our boat back to Coca departs at 06:00 am. We’ll have a packed breakfast on the way. You’ll have the option of visiting the Shuar Cultural Center along the way where you can learn about the cosmovision, myths, and legends of one of the indigenous cultures of the Amazon. We’ll also have a chance to try typical gastronomy. The visit will last about 3-4 hours and will cost $20 per person.
