This wetland complex is located in the Siekopai ancestral territory between Ecuador and Peru, in the most biogeographical region of the Amazon. This route crosses the corridor that connects the Cuyabeno Fauna Production Reserve, with the Yasuní National Park, El Güeppí Sekime and the Communal Airo Pai in Peru. This protected area is home to more than 50 lakes that feed the Aguarico River. Located in the extreme north of the Ecuadorian Amazon, one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world. With more than 770,000 hectares, this wetland complex is the largest Ramsar site in Ecuador. This important complex contains various types of wetlands, among which the Cuyabeno floodplain forests, permanent rivers, lakes and ponds stand out. Around 1,500 species of plants, 600 species of birds, with about 234 species of mammals (of which 120 are bats), 156 reptiles and 180 amphibians characteristic of the Napo-Putumayo Pleistocene refuge. The presence of threatened aquatic mammals stands out, such as the Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis), giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis)and river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis andSotalia fluviatilis), in addition to the Cofán, Secoyas and Sionas tribes.
07:30 am transfer to the Port of the Marina. Departure at 08:00 a.m. (fast public service boat), navigation time approximately 4 hours, arrival at Nuevo Rocafuerte, the last border town and lunch in the sector and we will do the paperwork at Immigration to cross the border and take our adventure canoe to the town of Pantoja in Peru, we will spend the night in a small hostel and we will know the daily life of the place.
05:00 a.m., breakfast. With your luggage ready, you will embark to continue our expedition going up the Aguarico river to the mouth of the Aguas Negras river, 4 hours away, we will go up a short section to a camp where we set up our campsite, here we will see some formations of lagoons such as the Lagarto Cocha and Sancudo Cocha lagoons, which are the largest, during the afternoon and night we will hike in the jungle and observe flora and fauna, after dinner we will walk at night to find nocturnal animals.
06:00 a.m. Breakfast, we prepare our necessary equipment to start a walk inside the tropical humid forest, in order to find traces of large mammals or monkeys. We return for lunch and transfer to the Secoya community in Puerto Estrella, during the journey we will find quantities of Pink and Gray Dolphins (indoor camping), during the night we take our canoe and we will sail silently through the river ravines, to observe the king of the waters, the caiman.
05:00 a.m. Breakfast, this morning we will observe the birds that inhabit the banks of the river and observe pink dolphins and monkeys, during the afternoon we will take branches from the river and enter calm waters for experiential fishing for piranhas and other species, if we are lucky dinner smiles at us will be spectacular, return dinner and rest.
We’ll have another early breakfast at 05:30 am before visiting 2 more incredible saladero to view parakeets and lorikeets along the Napo river. Afterward we’ll take a short walk to the 45-meter high tower where we can enjoy a spectacular landscape of almost endless jungle. Our final stop will be another saladero where up to 11 species of parrots are known to visit. During the return back to camp we have the option of visiting a local Kichwa community to learn about their culture. Upon arrival back at camp, we’ll have lunch before packing up and heading back to the City of Coca around 17:00 pm.
